Recap of New Zealand Advanced Hygienic Design Training Course in May

The New Zealand Regional Section ran a very well-attended and successful Advanced Course in Auckland at the Jet Park Auckland Airport Hotel from Tuesday 9th to 11th May 2023.

This course is now the 3rd Advanced Course we have run since the easing of Covid restrictions starting in the first quarter of 2022. Food Companies and Equipment Suppliers have welcomed the opportunity to resume attendance at conferences and training events.

The course was delivered by Shane Mason and David Lowry with the event co-managed by Wendy Bayliss, Executive Manager of NZIFST, EHEDG’s collaborating institutional partner as an industry good not-for-profit organization. EHEDG uses NZIFST for the event listing and registration home page.

We had a full course at the May event with 24 delegates attending, representing food manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and service providers. The course was particularly well supported by Kraft Heinz Corporation with 12 Sanitation Leads from processing plants in Australia and NZ attending. The split of sectors represented (including the Kraft Heinz team) was:

  • Food Manufacturing – 14 delegates

  • Equipment Suppliers – 8 delegates including 4 from GEA, 3 from Tetra Pak, and one from TOMRA

  • Service Providers – 2 delegates from ECOLAB – cleaning & sanitation

Shane set up multiple case study examples for the teams of 8 to apply the learnings of the classroom training and all agreed that the case studies really helped with the understanding of the principles and examples. In the end, we were happy to see all candidates pass the course.

As per usual, the course was full-on, and based on feedback, we are planning to extend the course by another ½ day for the next event to allow for more ‘personal’ examples and discussion from the candidates and the presenters.
